ROTORUA SKYLINE SKYRIDES

This premier Rotorua Tourist attraction with its luges and restaurant on the slopes of Mt Ngongotaha has seen significant growth and needed to upgrade the capacity of their aerial gondola system with minimum disruption to the existing operation.

Sigma was engaged to design the extensions to the lower and upper gondola terminals, review the carpark layout and provide the planning services to obtain the necessary Resource Consents. A completely new Dappelmayr cableway system was constructed with eight person

gondolas while the old system was still operating.  The extensions to the terminals doubled their size.  They were also constructed while the existing gondola operated, transporting customers to both the luges and restaurant.  Providing lateral restraint to the lower cable tower proved an interesting challenge.  It took the full tension of the loaded cableway and gondolas and was founded on soft lake sediments.

This project followed on from previous ones where Sigma designed the top terminal inside / outside cafe, extensions to the restaurant and provided resource planning services to obtain consent for the giant swing and bungy experiences.
